MIKE DAY

A Musical Journey

I started out singing like most in choir at church.  The choir I was in was a boys choir and we were paid.  Continued in boys choir until my voice changed in my early teens.  At some time during my choir years my parents got me a guitar and lessons.  Denny Heckard taught me how to play and pick Folk songs by Peter, Paul and Mary and Bob Dylan.  At this point I began writing songs.  After a year of guitar lessons, they bought me my first electric guitar.  In my teenage years I was in several rock bands including one where we did all originals.  We played local coffee houses and parks.

Soon after I got married and we had several children.  My performing days were limited to being in the worship band at church.  Sometimes I’d lead and other times I’d play bass or drums.  During these years I continued to write songs.  Two of them were picked up by Dave Bell.  He used one of them on his debut album “Sing And Rejoice”.  The other one “Holy Is Your Name” was on his first release by Word Records (now Warner Brothers Records) on the album “Lion of Juda”.  Lion of Juda was recorded in English, Spanish and French.  It did quite well for a number of years.  The song was also printed in hymnals and sheet music.  This opportunity spurred me on to continue writing and expand in to country music.  During this time I wrote and recorded a demo of “Country Man” and “Our Time” with the help of Byron Spears.  The demo made it into the hands of Ricky Van Shelton who commented that there is a number one song there.  Unfortunately he was not looking for new music to record at that time.

Currently I find myself in a writing spree and continue to add to my collection of music.  I released a self-published album “Another Day” in May 2022. Another Day can be streamed on most platforms and found on Amazon and iTunes.  Most of the songs are about life, love and family.  Many are humorous with some sort of message.  Additional albums will be released as time allows.  I play my originals at open mics when and where appropriate.  My solo/duo/band performs covers and originals from the 50s through today of country and rock with a touch of folk.
